COLSC – Summer Sprints

Huge congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in COLSC – Summer Sprints.
PB’s galore and loads of medals won over the two days. Special mention to Emily Sharp who won the Fina points prize for top girl in the 16yrs & over category – well done Emily!

Another Amazing Achievement

Massive congratulations to Mark Jones who has just taken part in the British Masters Nationals (55-59 year age group) and set a NEW BRITISH RECORD for the 800m long course...
FINA World Masters Swimming Championships 1998 Casablanca Morocco.
A Scotsman named Sandy Galletly from Glasgow wins the Mens 55-59 years 800m freestyle long course World Title in a world record time of 10.03.22

Fast forward 17 years and Sandy Galletly (who is now 73 years of age) has seen the world record time he set in 1998 broken many times but he is still clinging on to the British Masters Record. The record has stood the test of time and is one of the oldest records in British Masters Swimming having survived the full body suit era when many new records were set.

Up steps Mark Jones (Everton Swimming Association) who has just moved up to the 55-59 years age group and has been training with the 800m long course British Masters Record in mind even though the last British Masters record he set was 20 years ago in 1995 (35-39 years long course 1500m freestyle at the Leeds International Pool - since demolished and replaced by the John Charles Centre for Sport).

A well-paced swim saw a 400m split of 4.59.30 meaning that the second 400m had to be swum in under 5.03.92 to break the record.
A frantic last 100m (1.13.51) and the scoreboard flashed 10.02.68 NEW BRITISH RECORD!!!
Mark's Full Results in the Men’s - 55-59 years age group
800m Freestyle - 1st place New GB Record!!!
400m Freestyle - 1st place
400 IM - 2nd place (beaten by a visiting Russian swimmer)
200 Fly - 2nd place (beaten by the same visiting Russian swimmer)
200 Freestyle - 3rd place
200 Breast - 3rd place
200 IM - 5th place
200 Backstroke - 5th place
Next up for Mark, will be the ASA Masters Championships (25m pool) in October when the target will be to break the 55-59 years British Masters short course records for the 800m and 1500m freestyle.
Well done Mark, we are all proud of you.
